Back-to-School Rally for Milo-Grogan Youth
The Milo Grogan Unit of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Columbus hosted a back-to-school rally for youth at their Milo-Grogan Unit, 1012 Cleveland Avenue from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2001. The event celebrated the achievements of children who participated in the summer program and recognized junior staff members and talent contest winners. The rally was co-sponsored by the Community Shelter Board (CSB) and was designed to give area students a positive send-off back to school.
"Boys and Girls Clubs is about helping young people realize their full potential," said Boys and Girls Clubs of Columbus executive director, Bob Zuercher. "This event provides a great jump start on the new school year,"
City Council member Kevin Boyce, who grew up on the near north side, was the special guest speaker at the rally. His message encouraged youth to excel in the upcoming school year. "Our young people are our future, and it is very important that we nurture them in all ways possible. I could have been a statistic, but I had great people in my life who influenced me to head in a meaningful direction," said Boyce. "It is my goal to encourage every young person I come in contact with. I was glad to be involved in the great day and commend the Community Shelter Board and the Milo Grogan Unit of the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus for their efforts," noted Boyce.
Lively music was provided by So So Blessed entertainment, under the direction of popular WVKO DJ, Nina Taylor. Outdoor activities included games, prizes and lunch. School supplies were given to those in attendance.
"This is the second year for what has proven to be a strong community partnership which will help in the development of families and children in Milo Grogan," said Milo-Grogan Unit Director Gail Brown.
Donations of school supplies, prizes and food were made by local businesses interested in helping area youth. Donors for the free event included: Bob Ater, Columbus Division of Police-Strategic Response Bureau, Columbus Fire Department, Columbus Metropolitan Library, Columbus Youth Foundation, Fifth Third Bank, Keith McCormish, Meijer, Inc., National City, Nationwide Insurance, Premiums and Promotions, and Stockamp.
