Community Shelter Board Gains New Board Members

The Community Shelter Board recently welcomed four new members to the Board of Trustees. Board chair, Steve Rish welcomed James Curphey, Jon Sadler, Eric Schottenstein and James Upton as new board members.

James Curphey is a partner in the law firm Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur, practicing in business-related litigation. With the Porter Wright since 1987, Curphey represents companies in a wide variety of disputes, including cases involving contracts, commercial transactions and the protection of intellectual property. He is an active member of the Columbus, Ohio State and American Bar Associations. Curphey is an elder at Broad Street Presbyterian Church and is active in a variety of leadership positions there. He is Chair of the Broad Street Food Pantry, one of the largest pantries in central Ohio. Curphey is a graduate of The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He and his wife have two children and reside in Upper Arlington.

Jonathan Sadler is vice president and regional manager in the residential mortgage department at Fifth Third Bank. He specializes in residential and construction lending. He has 19 years of banking experience in personal mortgage counseling. Sadler has served on several boards including the Columbus Board of Realtors, AIDS Service Connection and Building Industry Association boards. He is past treasurer and currently vice chair of the Franklin County Alcohol Drug and Mental Health (ADAMH) Board. Sadler is a graduate of Miami University.

Eric Schottenstein is the president of Joshua Homes, a boutique-style housing developer. Joshua Homes is the youngest and fastest growing company on the Business First –Top 25 Homebuilders List. The company is currently ranked 11th in central Ohio. Schottenstein is a native of Columbus and the son of the late Mel Schottenstein, a co-founder of the Community Shelter Board. The Schottenstein family’s support of the work to end homelessness in our community is extraordinary. A family member has been on the board of CSB since its inception. In addition, Eric and his wife Melanie are co-chairs of CSB’s key fundraising event, the annual Mel Schottenstein Birthday Celebration. Eric and Melanie have five children.

James Upton is Associate Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of African American and African Studies. Upton teaches political sociology, philosophy, and research methodology at the graduate level. With a Ph.D. in political science, Upton has published books, grant reports, and numerous research manuscripts and journal articles. He has testified before state Commissions on Civil Rights and has also spoken internationally on race relations, political violence and citizen participation. Upton is married and has one son.
