Over 100 Milo-Grogan area children received a positive "Back to School" message and school supplies in preparation for the start of school this year. Chanting "I’m cool with back to school", the children were encouraged by hometown NBA star, Lawrence Funderburke, gospel DJ Shawn Scott who played the latest jams and "Don King" as portrayed by Paul Anderson. The end of summer program celebration and back to school rally held at the Milo Grogan unit of the Boys and Girls Club was sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club, Lutheran Social Services and the Community Shelter Board.
The three-hour free event included games, crafts and activities, hot dogs, and lots of fun for the elementary school-aged participants of the Milo Grogan summer program. The students danced, painted their faces and ate heartily after consuming the serious back to school message presented by special guest speaker, Funderburke. With Don King as master of ceremonies, the children listened intently as King and Funderburke drove home the message about the importance of education.
Milo Grogan center director Gail Brown presented special awards to the junior staff who assisted with the summer program.
"These young people worked especially hard to help us make smooth transitions throughout the days of the summer program," said Brown. "Without their help, we wouldn’t have been able to manage so many children to have an effective, fun program."
Funderburke and Brown handed out the awards; beautifully engraved plaques inscribed for the occasion. A special surprise award was presented to Brown from Lutheran Social Services and the Community Shelter Board.
"We just wanted to thank her for all the hard work she does and for allowing us to participate with the great children in her program," said Carol Menge, executive director of social services for Lutheran Social Services.
Other supporters from the Milo Grogan area and around town contributed to the successful event. Donors to the event included: Abbot Foods, Staples, Krogers, Nationwide, Premiums and Promotions, Pepsi, Borders Books, Walmart, WVKO radio, Nina Taylor, So, So Blessed Entertainment, Hardiman and Associates, Bob Ater, Paul Anderson, Lutheran Social Services staff and Community Shelter Board staff.
"It’s exciting to see so much support for our young people," said Toni Smith, community relations director for the Community Shelter Board. "This event shows what we can do when we work together."
The Boys and Girls Club of Columbus, Inc. supports physical, educational and social development for youth ages 6 to 18. Lutheran Social Services provides families and individuals throughout Central Ohio with supportive services and currently operates housing programs and homeless shelters for men and women.
