Event Showcases Urban Theme and Unique Interpretive Dance Program
COLUMBUS, OHIO, June 7, 2000 — Honorary Event Chair David P. Lauer, president and COO of Bank One hosted Community Shelter Board’s (CSB) sixth annual Mel Schottenstein Birthday Luncheon at The Hyatt Regency today.
"We’re very pleased that more than 800 community members attended today’s luncheon, which raised a record breaking $800,000 to support the work of CSB," said Lauer. To date, more than $3.5 million has been raised through the annual birthday luncheon celebrations. Lauer also announced that National City will serve as the lead corporate sponsor for CSB’s 2001 celebration, followed by the Pizzuti Companies in 2002. Additionally, it was announced that Battelle just agreed to sponsor the event in 2003.
In addition, Lauer discussed Bank One’s recent $250,000 commitment to the Rebuilding Lives plan. Lauer said, "Bank One is challenging community leaders and businesses to pledge their support to the Rebuilding Lives plan." He explained that Bank One set up their gift in a unique way ---$100,000 of the $250,000 commitment will be given as a one-to-one match as new private funds are raised for the implementation of the Rebuilding Lives plan.
This year’s event titled "Ending Homelessness" featured an urban theme with a dynamic three-part program that incorporated interpretive dance and unique music. The program also featured children from Generations Performing Arts Center performing original choreographed dance routines in several styles including soft-shoe, tap and "Stomp."
In addition, local rap group R.O.A.R. added to the urban theme and closed the sixth annual luncheon with a one-of-a kind musical performance of "Mel’s Song" composed by Peter Larson.
CSB Executive Director Barbara Poppe and Board Chair Steve Rish highlighted the latest developments and successes of the Rebuilding Lives program which included work around a variety of programs including the Community Engagement Center operated by Maryhaven, the Safe Haven program and two supportive housing programs that address long-terms solutions for homeless individuals.
"Thanks to all our sponsors in the public and private sector, we are moving forward to implement the Rebuilding Lives plan and know many lives will be impacted positively as a result of their support," said Poppe. "We’d also like to extend a very special thank you to the entire Schottenstein Family, including Lenore Sagner, Eric J. and Melanie Schottenstein, Holly Kastan, and Julie Schottenstein-Saar for their unending dedication and support of CSB. Mel would be so pleased to see his legacy carried on so successfully and passionately."
Mel Schottenstein founded the Community Shelter Board in 1986 to respond to the growing problem of homelessness in Columbus. Its primary goals are to develop and implement a strategy that increases community awareness about the causes of and solutions to homelessness and ultimately decrease the demand for emergency shelter. CSB also aims to provide open access to emergency shelter for all families and individuals experiencing a housing crisis through the combined resources of CSB and its partner agencies. CSB is funded by the City of Columbus, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, the United Way of Franklin County, the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the State of Ohio and other public and private donors.
