Supportive housing ends homelessness for chronically homeless individuals and families coping with mental illness, addiction or chronic illness. Supportive housing is affordable housing that is linked with mental health, alcohol and drug treatment, employment, and other supportive services. By providing an alternative to expensive emergency public services - hospitals, jails, and shelters - supportive housing is cost-effective and rebuilds lives by enabling residents to live independently. Through the Rebuilding Lives plan, over 457 units of supportive housing have become operational since July 1999. Another 172 units are in the development process.
