Preventing Homelessness

Sharon Smith Mills works hard for the simple things in life:  a decent job, a small apartment, and a car to get to work.  Sharon and her husband are separated, and when her multiple sclerosis flared up, she had to stay home from work for three months while her strength returned.    Without income, Sharon was in danger of losing it all.

Sharon turned for help to Central Community House, which collaborates with CSB’s Homelessness Prevention Program to help people with low income avoid becoming homeless.  Central Community House linked Sharon to a number of community resources to help her through the crisis.  The Homelessness Prevention Program, operated by Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio, paid the back rent, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society helped with late fees.  The Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services provided food coupons during the crisis period.

Sharon gradually worked her way back to full-time work.  She is trying to keep stress at a minimum, maintain good health, and get back together with her husband.  “Right now I am just so thankful to be well,” said Sharon.  “I’d also like to thank the people at the Homelessness Prevention Program who made it possible for me to keep my apartment.”

The Community Shelter Board and its partner agencies work together with many dedicated individuals and organizations to prevent homelessness and promote housing solutions each year.  Your support is so very important for families and individuals who are making honest efforts to avoid homelessness.  We invite the entire community to work together toward solutions that help our family members, friends, and neighbors live securely in their own homes.
